Montana Cannabis 101
Montana’s medical and recreational cannabis markets celebrate and emphasize small businesses, but the two programs have taken drastically different paths to successful implementation.
Montana voters passed medical marijuana all the way back in 2004, but the program has regularly been racked by legislative opposition and attempts to have it shut down. In recent years, however, the program has found stability: legislators ended “tethering,” a policy that limited each medical patient to shopping at a single dispensary, and established pragmatic rules and regulations for the program.
In 2021, Lawmakers Begin Implementing Recreational Cannabis
In November 2020, Montana voters passed recreational cannabis with 57% in support. Lawmakers modified the initiatives to reflect their priorities in the 2021 Montana State Legislative session. Businesses and organizations such as ours constantly monitor and work with lawmakers to ensure the recreational program is fair, pragmatic and effective.
